Yep it is the pollution restrictions that have affected the gas here. We have 
what CA calls oxygenated fuel. It was designed to burn cleaner. Unfortunately 
while it may burn a little cleaner you burn more which negates the supposed 
benefits and it damages lines in older cars. I was a Technician at Chevron 
for about 10 years and saw the new fuels come in and the results they have 
had.
My Uncle lived in KY and I visited there once as a very small child, It was 
very pretty as I remember.
