Better to have the title transferred before picking up the trailer,
obtaining the home state title/registration/license, etc. and tow it  home
with confidence.  Or, use a tag from another trailer. Or, use the valid tag
of the original owner and send it back.  The latter is the simplest and
works as you take a copy of the registration with you and send it back to
the seller once  you get to the destination.  Just date the sale a few days
later than actual.  Should get you through all states without a hitch.

I bought the in-transit tag in Florida, traveled to VA.  Each state could
have refused to honor the intransit tag.  Florida charges twice what other
states charge for sales tax and that's why they want the intransit tax.
Florida only recognizes CASH for the transaction - no checks or credit
cards.
