It is nice to hear you are enjoying the Airstream experience!

As you may recall, I had a '73 Excella 500 which was similar except for the rear
bath...mine was a rear bedroom with a side bath on the curb side.  I had the
belly pans down once, while looking into adding a catalytic heater.  I noted
where the tanks were and the fact that they didn't share the same "compartment".
There seemed to be cross-members between the side frame beams and the tanks were
in their each little space.  The black water was nearest the rear and the gray
forward.  I would say the gray was between the rear wheels and the black toward
the rear of it.  No tanks were at the very rear.

After experiencing the fact that they were only about 17-19 gallons each, I
decided to look into replacing them with larger ones.  I didn't get very far
because I became aware that the smaller frames weren't meant to carry such
weight as 2-25/30 gallon tanks.

I always loved where the drain was though.  It was neatly placed about 18"
behind the rear wheel, streetside of course, but it was snug up against the
curved aluminum.  It really wasn't very visible.  I did replace the seals in the
slide valves in both.

Now that you've been there and done that, (with the frame stiffening done) are
you considering some tank work?
