That filter is a requirement of the pump manufacturer. It is there to 
keep chunks of plastic or whatever from the storage tank from getting 
into the pump and jamming it.

Many Airstream's either as standard equipment or as an option depending 
on year and model have a Everpure filter installed in the galley counter 
with a separate tap.
For a few years Airstream offered a whole coach Everflo filter mounted 
in the roadside rear storage compt. or under the bathroom sink.

A popular add on is a whole coach filter between the water tap and the 
city water inlet. A number of clever brackets and holders have been 
created to hold a canister filter. Basic charcoal filters
and more exotic blends like Hydro Life are available to use in that 
application. Prices run from $30-100 for an add on filter.
