 It's completely normal that you have this problem only when the tow
vehicle is plugged in, as I said, the breaker is in series with the
charge line from the vehicle.

 I'd start by disconnecting the battery and seeing what happens. Check
the voltage on the battery both before and after disconnecting it, you
should see 13+ volts with it plugged in and the engine running, 12.6
volts or so when it's disconnected, if it's fully charged. You did
connect the battery correctly, didn't you? Red goes to the + terminal,
white to the - side of the battery.

If the lights and brakes work on the trailer, the connector is probably
wired correctly. Check this with the trailer UN-hitched.

Telling me what works and what doesn't on the trailer will help. Lights?
(with and without the battery connected, with and without the tow
vehicle connected.)

This would probably be pretty easy for me to troubleshoot if I was
there, it's considerably more difficult "remotely". :-(

Get a copy of Barre's "Managing 12 Volts" for further education.
