Bob,
 Most states issue temporary tags, but check with your own State first.
In Michigan, for instance, we're allowed to take a "new to us" vehicle
straight home w/o plates. 

More important might be insurance; liability coverage is generally
provided by your tow vehicle as long as the trailer is attached, but
check with your agent for the details.
