 Ammonia gas is at least somewhat toxic, but it won't kill you instantly
or anything like that.

Many years ago, my Dad had a dairy that used ammonia refrigeration
systems, and it wasn't uncommon for leaks to develop. It would get so
bad that you could hardly go into the boiler room, but we did anyway and
it never killed us. Not too long ago, I was in a commercial ice plant in
Detroit that used ammonia refrigeration equipment, and there were little
wafts of ammonia gas as you walked around the room where the compressors
were located. They didn't seem to be afraid of it.

Keep the area well-ventilated and you should be OK when removing that
unit. RV Mobile sells replacement cooling units and it's my
understanding that it isn't that bad a job to replace it in your
existing fridge. It's done as a unit, you don't do it piecemeal, and it
should work as good as new if everything else is working and the
cabinet, doors, etc. aren't damaged.

Note that absorbtion cooling units can't be repaired as a general rule,
they're built and charged under carefully-controlled conditions. RV
