 If you're getting an ammonia smell, you need to get the unit out of
there ASAP.  Ammonia is highly toxic...  yes, the unit does need replacing.

Get a good ice chest and start eating the frozen food.  Once you smell
ammonia, the problem usually rapidly worstens and collapse of the reefer is
soon to follow usually.  I doubt the fridge will hold very long.  You should
be ready to use alternative means of food storage until you can get the core
or the unit replaced.
