The pull out sofa is really a one piece foam mattress which bends up from
the seat to form the back when in the couch position.  No sections or seams
when pulled out for a bed.  My experience is that it is very comfortable.
Ditto for my wife's opinion.

 We are very fussy about mattresses at home and use a very firm Beautyrest
Backcare mattress on a platform (no spring below).  So I think we are a good
judge of comfort and support.

I would think that a Futon would work.  Actually, the Airstream 
couch/bed works on the same principle as a futon,

I haven't  had the problem - yet.   Some other list members may have better
data that can be more definitive.  One tip I have heard is not to carry a
full black water tank too far.  The black water tank on my 25' is fairly
large, but the grey water tank is small.  The fresh water tank holds 45
gallons - the same as in the larger trailers.  (This is no longer true of
current production models.)  Since grey water is relatively easy to get rid
of, the combination of large fresh and black water tanks is an excellent way
to increase the boondocking range.
