Chuck,

Airstream experimented with vacuum power disk brakes for several years 
in the '70s.  A member of our unit has them and swears his Burb/Sov 
combo stops quicker than the Suburban alone.  He bought his
'76 new, and still has it, so I guess he should know.

Apparently they never caught on because the expertise to service them 
was not particularly universal.  Parts are now difficult to find, I have 
heard, but I've never heard of anyone calling the
factory to see if they are available.  I've seen on the list several 
times where folks have replaced them with electric, and sold the parts. 
 I mentioned one case to my friend here, figuring that it
might be worth a couple of hundred bucks to have a complete spare set in 
the garage, but he didn't seem too concerned about having parts, so 
maybe they don't break (no pun intended) that much.
