I should hasten to add that the 'unwanted behaviors' are invariably
inadvertantly trained by US... and it should be noted that they are also
maintained by OUR response to it... If you do find it necessary to leave
Maile alone for a bit, do NOT enter her space when she's whining or
crying... wait outside until she subsides (you may have to move out of
eye-ear-nose-shot) and wait for the crying to subside. If the crying starts
up when you enter, do not make eye-contact until she settles. This can be an
heart-breaking exercise: as the behavior 'undergoes extinction', it will
often (not always) intensify... hence the parent who gives candy to the
tantrumming child in the supermarket is only ensuring that that child will
go to THAT level of tantrum much more quickly, next time.
