If your kids liked Ocean City and Frontier Town, then they might like Assateague Island State Park
on Halloween Weekend. About mid-week, the Rangers recruited campers to role-play scary figures from
Assateague Island's past. After dark on Halloween night, the Rangers lit six campfires along the
beach about 100 steps apart. At each campfire, each family would play the designated role for other 
campers who walked from one campfire to the next. At the end of the campfire row, the Park Rangers
had free hot dogs and hot chocolate for everyone. 

When we participated in that program several years ago, Sandie and I played the role of a pirate and
his kidnapped Indian Princess. We picked up make shift "costumes" in town (Salvation Army), we read
the several pages of text provided by the Ranger which described our characters and we improvised a
little talk for each group. Six groups came by our campfire and each varied in size from 2-3
families to 4-5 families. Each roving group stayed 7-10 minutes while we played the role and talked
about our character (in character). We answered questions in character and had a grand time. It was
very easy to do. If you're interested, mid October would be a good time verify with the Rangers that
they plan to offer that program in two weeks. The program is not offered every year. 

Perhaps your kids would like to be part of a family role play or perhaps they would rather make the
rounds. Either way, it would be a different kind of Halloween experience from what most kids usually
experience. 

The first time we stayed at Assateague Island was simply because it was a convenient stop on our way
south as Snowbirds. We don't live near there and we don't have relatives or friends who live in
Maryland. The only time we stop in that area is when we're traveling through. October is a
delightful month for exploring Maryland.
