Daisy,
 The ammeter is probably more useful/less bogus than the voltmeter. You
could fabricate a shunt to replace that in the old UniVolt if you wanted
to use it. The voltmeter, like any analog unit, is simply not accurate
enough to be useful in any meaningful way. The difference between
fully-charged and 50% discharged is only about a half-volt, and you
don't want to run your battery below that level on a routine basis.
