At the risk of getting into more trouble, I have a set of removed bezels
from a '73.  The stop/tail light has a fiber optic pickup immediately behind
the bulb.  Nothing electronic, just a fiber optic pickup about 1/4 inch in
diameter that feeds into a 1/8 inch fiber optic cable.

Best bet would be to assure that the pickup is in it's boot behind the tail
lamp and/or a spider or some vermin hasn't covered the hole?  It's also
possible that a previous owner pushed the pickup out of the boot, not know
what it was.

I haven't seen one of these operate during the day and it's visibility might
be very limited.  Have you taken a look at them at night?

It seems very strange that both sides would not operate properly.
