Andy,

I'm of the same opinion.  While I initially reeled
from the cost of the spare tire, wheel mount package,
I also  looked at that cost in the picture of total
investment in my new trailer.  We are talking about 1%
or so.  Also the earlier posting regarding the body
work necessary to install the carrier clarifies much
of the price.

Safety is my bottom line goal.  While in my 20+ years
of towing I have never had to change a trailer tire, I
have always had a spare available.  

I have gone ahead and informed my dealer to have
Airstream supply the wheel and tire.  I also
authorized the factory to install the mount during the
initial trailer construction.  If that can't be done
we will take the tire and wheel and throw it in the
back of the van.
