oh, i'm quite familiar with hawaiian... former kamaaina kona-boy, here.
I liked your idea of paneling it over and using maximum area for solar
panels...
I wouldn't rivet them to the roof, though...might want to check out some of
the solar/rv sites for best mounting strategies...  you may wish to leave a
small space underneath the solar panels for air-circulation. i'd be inclined
to mount the solar panels on 'stand-offs'... or if i were using the
flexible/portable panels, i might even want to remove them when underway,
and mount them with suction-cups on whatever happens to be the sunny side of
the trailer when camped....

....you could put a sliding electric 'sun-roof'/'moon-roof' there...

...or place an ejection seat under it, explosive bolts, and an ejection
canopy... or....
