Joy,
 I cut off the 'A' frame, using a 3" air cutoff tool, about 4" in front
of the body shell. Did it there because I had to start someplace, and it
looked OK from there back. If necessary, I'd have gone back under the
body. As you guessed, I used the MIG for the welding, but could have
used stick; I have a 450 amp Lincoln motor-generator welder for that
(20HP electric motor driving the welding generator).

My 'A' frame was made like yours, only using 4" channel.

Like you, I prefer 6011 rod for general use. It will work well upside
down and vertical, but you do get a lot of spatter. The only rod I've
seen that makes a weld that "looks galvanized" is stainless steel.
