Your concern about ease of backing and being able to take off at short
notice are valid. My parents age 72 have a 29 ft  Airstream. I noticed
and from what they tell me it's length does limit their mobility, they
can not stop any old place. As a result they only use it for extended
trips preferring t o use a Bigfoot slide on truck camper  for short
weekend trips. It sounds like given what you have said an Airstream
around 20 or 21 feet would be about right.
