Re: [A/S] Generator in Trailer

George. Installing a generator in an Airstream trailer carries many risks.
The first consideration that must be made is how the weight and balance will
be altered. Secondly, the location of the fuel tank, how it is filled and
vented is extremely important. How the fuel tank is mounted and braced, and
protected in case of a collision is very critical. Thirdly, a steel shield
must surround the generator in the event of a fire. The wheels, tires, hub
and drum assemblies must be carefully balance as a unit, to minimize the
vibration that otherwise will be imposed on the generator, and fuel tank. If
you have someone do the installation that does not have an extreme intimate
knowledge of how an Airstream is constructed and what you must do when you
make such a modification, you are asking for what quite well might give you
very serious consequences. You also will be liable to anyone that may get
hurt should the system fail. Concealing the fuel tank in the underbelly, is
extremely hazardous, for many reasons. There are other solutions that will
solve your need. You can use a portable generator, as the interior of an
Airstream trailer does not get very hot, as long as the coach is in motion.
Therefore, there is no need to pre cool. You can mount a generator in your
tow vehicle, if it's a truck. And finally, you can install a generator that
runs on LPG. Airstream does not install generators in trailers basically
because people in general, refuse to properly maintain the equipment.
Therefore, this creates a tremendous liability, that they simply don't need.
What ever your choice, good luck. Lori
