Philip,

I'm not quite sure where you got your information but the frame under an
Airstream trailer is a full length ladder frame. At the point the A frame opens
to it's maximum width back to the rear bumper the frame is continuous with
crossmembers, longitudinal tubing between the rails  and outriggers from the
frame rails to the outer sides of the coach. The first page or two of the 70's
service manuals has a good illustration as does the current sales brochures. The
body shell is anchored during construction to the floor channel which runs along
the perimeter of the floor decking. The channel is in turn anchored to the frame
rails, crossmembers and outriggers.  If one looks under a coach you can see the
seam line between the belly pan and the belly wrap. This seam is anchored on the
frame rail. Airstream refers to this as a semi-monoque construction method.
