Bill,
     Stop and think about how it works.  When you tighten up the spring
bars, you are shifting weight to the front wheels of the tow vehicle, (and
back to the trailer wheels) and some of the weight is coming off of the rear
wheels of the tow vehicle, and off of the ball.  The weight is shifted
through the hitch, so that what Jim is right.  There is more strain on the
hitch, but as he says, "in a much different area on the hitch".
