Folks have pulled with nothing more then being hooked onto a hitch ball 
and  get along without any disasters HOWEVER for those of us that believe 
insurance (hospital, life or any other kind) is a reasonable safe guard 
worth affording then an equalizer hitch which includes some sway control 
features is a logical investment. Broken  balls, broken hitches, etc. are 
not uncommon even if they do not result in a disaster.  Plus I believe 
you cannot drop 400 lbs on the tail end of "most" vehicles with out some 
extra wear and tear on tires  and some lightening up of of front end 
traction.   But to each his own.
