[A/S] First Big Trip
Thanks again to eveyone in the group who gave me advice. My wife Mickie and I
just completed our shakedown trip in our 19' '64 Globe Trotter - 9,000 miles
across the country and back. We are towing with a '99 Dakota 4x4 with the 5.2
V-8, 4 speed auto, 3.9 rear end, factory towing package. The truck was
perfect for this trailer, had no problems at all.
Starting out from Connecticut, we went out on I-84 and I-90 west, stopping to
see Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone Park on our way out to Seattle. From there
we headed down the Pacific Coast Highway through Oregon, through the Redwood
Forest and then wine country in CA on our way to San Francisco. Then it was
Yosemite Park and through Death Valley to Las Vegas and Lake Havasu City to
see London Bridge. After a peek at The Alamo, we headed for New Orleans. From
there, we headed back home. All in 4 weeks.
It was fun, but an awful lot of driving in too short a period of time. I'm
new at this, and got a little too ambitious. Our last day on the road was a
900 miles from just south of Knoxville to home in Bethany, CT. It was
exciting, though, to cover the country in such a short time. The variety of
terrain and climate is amazing.
I saw a '53 Clipper in a RV park in Pacifica, CA. Pretty neat- the owner
showed me the inside, which the previous owner had customized with a lot of
stained wood, brass and copper. Reminded me of a boat cabin. I also noticed
some old slide-in truck campers that had an Airstream look, but just in
passing, didn't talk to the owners.
My front window leaks pretty bad when driving in the rain. I've noticed that
the newer A/S have a vinyl cover over the window. I am going to try to create
some kind of cover for mine. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I don't want to ramble on. I'll continue in another e-mail.
