Alan,
Although i still don't have very good mental picture of your speaker box
arrangement, i seriously doubt that the grilles are not removeable... my own
inclination would be to attempt to pry them loose, using a putty-knife or
something, working around the edges. From your description I would suppose
that the grilles are removed, then the speakers, and that the speaker boxes
are attached to the inner skin through the back of the speaker box.
