This probably is not accurate enough for applying levels to the exterior -- 
but my "tried and true (fast) method is to get a can of coke from the fridge 
and lay it on its side on the counter top -- and see which way it rolls.  
When I want to get really picky -- I use the little square bubble on the 
freezer inside ledge.
