[A/S]Oklahoma
The 30th Ozark Fall Foliage & Festival Caravan ended Wednesday
a.m. at Beaver Bend State Park near Broken Bow, OK after 25 days.
Carl and I are now heading west on non-Interstate roads in southern
Oklahoma. The terrain is finally the way we picture Oklahoma - from some
of those old westerns - gently rolling hills
The second day back on our own we visited a neat singing cowboy museum.
It's in Gene Autry, Oklahoma which is in southern central OK - just a
bit northeast of Ardmore, off Rt 53E. The museum is 'admittance by
donation' and loaded with memorabilia not only of Gene Autry but many
other western singers, stars, etc and that includes Roy Rogers, Hunter.
(c: Gene was Carl's cowboy idol so this was one museum I was able to
fully enjoy - usually I am urged out before I'm ready! We were amazed
at how many vsitors were there at a place out in the willywacks. Anyway,
it was well worth the drive.
For anyone traveling in OK here's a simple but full of historic places
to visit booklet - "Oklahoma Museums & Historic Sites Guide" (the
listing is by town). We have been using it to seek out neat places.
Yesterday we visited Fort Towson, site of the last Civil War surrender
of organized troops (General Stand Watie) and then the headquarters of
the Choctaw Nation. in Durant, OK.

It's Thursday and we're now headed for "On the Chisholm Trail Statue
& Museum" in Duncan and then on to Fort Sill Museum, Geronimo's
gravesite, and Medicine Bluffs.
