Re: [A/S] Fresh Water Tank

Hi Cynthia:

The tank you have in your '68 should be the same as the one in my '67.
It is 12" x 12" x about 48" long, right? It also should be made out of
polyetheylene.

I found a leak in my tank. When I got it out, I found that someone had
tried to fiberglass the bottom and up a few inches. The fiberglass did
not effectively adhere to the polyethylene. I was able to pop it off
with a screwdriver (mercifully) and reveal the cracks underneath.

Then I used a polyethylene "welding" kit. This kit is an inexpensive
thing, about 8 or 9 bucks, as I recall. The kit is comprised of a small
stick of poyethylene (~1/8" x 4 or 5 ") and a similar larger diameter
stick of what looked like electric glue gun glue. (I would LOVE to be the
one marketing this)

You first open up the crack surface (make a groove) with a soldering gun
tip and then "weld" the crack shut with the small stick. Then you use a
heat gun to melt the larger stick over the weld to reinforce it.

If your crack is not too long this might work for you. It sure worked
for me. Might be worth a try and the price is right (sort of).

The proof is in the hydrotest. When you get done welding, fill the tank
with water and it either leaks or it doesn't. That's the beauty of a
gravity tank.
