Sherry, I wouldn't attempt to operate ANYTHING directly from the solar panels, due to just what you've experienced. It's very instructional to watch the ammeter on my solar array (see my Avion page at the URL in my SIG). The pointer will wag around like a dog's tail as clouds, even small ones, pass by.
