That sounds like the description of a three try circuit board trying to light the
burner. If the flame sensor does not/cannot indicate a flame present the board will
shut off the gas valve and try again. After the third try the board will lock out
until reset by turning the thermostat off and back on. Depending on the model of
the furnace it will have either a 2 or 3 electrode ignitor. One electrode is always
ground. The second will be either the sparking electrode or a combined spark and
flame sensor electrode. The third electrode is a flame sensor. The 2 electrode
version is newer. If the ceramic cracks or the electrode wire is loose,
disconnected or corroded it will stop the board from sensing the flame.
