Re: [A/S] towing with a big rig
I saw a Kenworth towing a fifth wheel last summer. It was pulling into
the campground at Amana Iowa. Looked like it was cut down and made for a
RV tow truck with four doors and probably 16 or 17" tires. There may be
only the one.
If I was to tow an A/S with a conventional semitractor, I'd probably
want a single axle tractor and want to add fenders to the rear wheels to
cut down on trash tossed at the trailer. Without a lot of tongue weight
the semi tractor might prove to be unstable because of too little weight
on the tractor rear axle. It might tend to tow the front of a fifth
wheel a bit high in the air.
Otherwise it should tow fine, though I'd not expect great economy unless
there was a couple stages of overdrive in the transmission. The big
engines have a narrow range of performance, that's why they are
connected to 10 and 13 speed transmissions.
