Hunter,

Taking 50 from from Nevada to Denver won't slow you down much, especially if
you stay on I-70 after Grand Junction.  If you're going to spend a night on
the road between there and Aurora, you might as well take 50 and 285 as Tom
Patterson suggested.   There are plenty of RV parks.  There's a decent KOA
in Gunnison, which is the only park I happen to know about.

I've driven 50 east from Colorado, and didn't like it much in Kansas,
because it was very narrow, and there were no shoulders much of the way.
Dodge City and Fort Dodge did seem interesting, although I didn't have time
to stop there.  It's places like this where the phrase "the wrong side of
the tracks" must have originated.  The town itself is almost entirely on the
north side of the tracks.  The cowboys drove the cattle up to the railroad
from the south, so the cowboy bars and flophouses (and the stockyards) were
probably all on the south side.  There's very little south of the tracks
now.  

I'd invite you to stop by for a visit in Colorado Springs, but I'll be on
the road in a couple of days.   I expect to spend Monday in Rocky Mountain
National Park, but it doesn't sound like you'll be in Colorado that soon.
I'll be reading your travelogue on the road, probably following in your
tracks much of the way.
