[A/S] Clearcoat problems

I have a 73 A/S with a clearcoat problem over the water heater. The 
rest of the trailer looks perfect. The question is how do i spot the 
problem area (App 2 sq ft) to match the rest of the trailer. It looks 
to me as if the coating was silver paint with a clear coat over it. 
We stripped the area and buffed it to a bright luster which dont 
match. Can someone tell me if there is a two part paint process or do 
I just need to live with the nonconformity. BTW I'm new to the site, 
any help will be greatly appreciated.
