Hunter, TANSTAAFL: You can operate off-grid exactly as you would when you're plugged in. All it takes is money. The less attention you wish to pay to your usage, the more it costs. Without doing any math, I can tell you that 4 Golf Cart batteries and 4 75-watt panels would be a good start for what you describe. Those panels are about 21" X 48", IIRC.
