One question you have to answer is the clearcoast drying up and flaking
off.  If it is then you will have to first strip it off to get a uniform
finish on your skin.  Use a paint remover for this.  Many have recommend
Bix.   I would then polish with Rolite Metal Polish.  If you want a
bright mirror finish then polish again with the Rolite AP300.  If you
want to put a seal coat over your polish   a good auto paint sealer will
help.  Rolite has an auto paint sealer I have used but  I can't say how
long it will hold up but it is an easy wipe on hand polish off procedure.

Might give you some insight.  If you cleancoast is not coming off I
would suggest getting some Walbernizer finish and treating the clearcoat.
It will bring up some luster as well as help the clearcoat remain
flexible.  But with an early 70's model I suspect half of your clear coat
is probably flaked off.
