What were talking about here is called an "uplink" and is not so uncommon 
anymore but I'm not sure what they cost.
They were used a lot by news reporters during the Desert storm war. Those 
looked like the big satellite dish just small, maybe 30 inches across with a 
suitcase next to them that held the transmitter.
There is also the satellite telephone that allows one to call anywhere from 
anywhere and it has just a foot long X 2 inch diameter antenna.
