Take a look a Pocketmail and the Sharp TM-20.  Check it out at 
www.pocketmail.com.
It is a small hand held device with a hunt and peck keyboard that is 
connected with a Pocketmail Servers.  You enter your messages and at 
almost any telephone you can dial up the server number and place your 
device against the headphones and sent  your  messages.  You can also 
download your incoming messages.  Obvioulsy it is not a full load 
computer but for those I have talked with who have it is very effective 
for somewhat limited messages.  Server fees are about $10.00 per month 
and the device is $100 or less at your major office supply stores.
