Mindspring/Earthlink has an 800 number at 8 cents per minute.  You can use any
mail program you like.  They also have local-number dial-ins in most major
cities.  Probably not so many as AOL but plenty just the same.

I am using Netscape Messenger as a mail client.  It will let you "batch"
outgoing and incoming messages, just like an AOL "Flash session" but using the
same computer and the same phone line it will upload or download about twice as
many messages per unit of time.

Actually I think you can use a third-party mail program with AOL too, not sure
though.
