Ok, now I don't want to rain on anybody's parade but I have had the
unusual opportunity to talk with Dick  McIntyre on several occasions. Not
that anyone would know who he his, but he has worked for Airstream as a
subcontractor and consultant on interior and exterior finishes since the
late '50's. He was involved in the early development of the clearcote
Airstream used. He worked as a subcontractor doing interior finishes on
the coaches built at the California plants until they closed. When he
visited here I talked with him about the interior of the 61 Bambi I have.
According to him, the interior finish was a "pickled finish", a mix of
paint and varnish. The reason they did it was to hide the flaws in the
wood. The interior wood was pieces rejected from larger coach production.
At the time he said, the Bambi was not a "premium" coach. Just a fun
thing to use up excess material. Just a little bit of living history.
