According t our '73 Owner's Manual, they were an option and only suitable 
as a way to charge the house battery. It is in fact referred to as a 
"Battery Charger": *not* suitable for running appliances such as AC. 
Specs include:

     Engine: Tecumseh 1 cylinder
     Normal fuel consumption: 0.9 lb/hr.
     Rated voltage (2000 RPM): 15
     Amperes (200 RPM): 20
     Remote control timer settings (Hours): 0 to 3
     Remote start: yes

Kind of a nifty gizmo, if you ask me. Wonder how much noise it made, 
though (no specs on that).
