RE: [a/s] looking for a tow vehicle....

I pull a 1966 Vintage 22' Safari with a Dodge E-150 campervan with a 350 cu. in. V-8.  The older Airstreams were designed lighter and pulling it was never much problem.  Then I got my original Reese stabilizer hitch restored.  (Cost $60 to locate the stabilizer bars at a used RV shop at opposed to $3500 for the Hensley). The result was a rock stable ride at high speed.  I passed and was passed by a lot of big semis on the way down to CA from Oregon.

 

One big factor in the strength of my van as a puller is the way it cuts the wind.  It is the same height as the Airstream so the trailer just slips through the wind.  A pickup cuts the wind and then the wind wraps around the cab and causes a secondary event when it hits the front of the trailer. 

 

So my pick for the idea towing vehicle would be a ford E-350 cargo van with the big diesel or the 7.2 liter gas engine. It will give you loads of passenger room and cargo space for all that stuff that you don't want outside or in your trailer.
