Actually, those are usually called "whistle pigs". Their principle role seems to
be a spot on the food chain for hawks, eagles and coyotes. Over here in Idaho
they use them as an indicator of the general health of the population of the
above mentioned critters. In the Birds of Prey wildlife area the birds time their
chick hatching to the whistle pig population. They apparently have no fear of
roads and vehicles and are in numbers.
