Hunter was describing the red rocks sticking up like " stalagmites (tites?)". 
 I was going through Mermac Caverns in Missouri several years ago and the 
guide had a way to remember which was which.   He said the stalagmites grow 
up from the floor and MITE reach the ceiling and the stalagtites have to hold 
TITE to the ceiling so they don't fall off.   It is a simple reminder that 
works for me.
