Hunter,

Let me suggest that you do a very close inspection of the perimeter of
your door. My bet is that something is making the door not shut quite
all the way. This could be a buildup of dirt or some other foreign
object or material, or something else that is causing a misalignment of
the latching mechanism. If the door is not properly aligned (shut
completely) the latch will press to hard on the latch keeping surface
and cause lots of friction when you open it. Lubrication might be a
temporary measure. 

On the other hand, there might be something binding within the door
handle mechanism itself. WD-40 would be my first attack, then
disassembly and repair replacement of the handle latch mechanism.

I remember the door doing this, and my hunch is it is the misalignment
issue mentioned above.
