Hunter,
I was having a problem opening the door on our vintage a/s.  I finally
discovered that I need to push the door in with one hand when I'm outside
before I try to turn the handle.  Somehow that releases the mechanism.  On
the inside going out, I need to pull in the handle before turning it.  Maybe
this will work for you.
