Not easier to see at night.  Driving 90 mph, when the visibility with or without
lights is 50 feet, is just plain crazy in my book.  They are following the
taillights of the vehicle in front, which they can barely see at that distance,
and can see nothing else at all.

Maybe they can see the yellow and white lines, but they certainly can't see
another vehicle, stopped or slower, until they are too close to be able to stop.

I was talking about the Grapevine and the stretch immediately north of it.  The
nearest large town is Bakersfield (Barstow is out in the middle of the Mojave
Desert, a long way to the East).  The Grapevine itself is steep and winding and
the speed limit for trucks on the down grade is 35 mph.  There is a special
truck lane and two or three runaway truck ramps.  Most of the trucks do indeed
go slow down that hill.  It would be utterly scary to do otherwise.  But once
down on the flat ...
