I spoke with the owner of a propane cylinder exchange company in Ft.
Worth who said that the horizontal cylinders have a 'dip tube' extending
from the valve to the 'top of the cylinder', the highest spot when it is
horizontal. This allows the vapor to exit the valve instead of the
liquid. Apparently the dip tube configuration on the old cylinders does
not allow the new OPD valve to be installed. This means that a new
cylinder presumably with a dip tube & OPD combo arrangement must be
bought to replace the older cylinder at 12 years of age or April 2003
whichever comes first. He said that this whole OPD thing is 'fixing
something that ain't broke' and the only party benefiting is the valve
manufacturer(s). He says it has cost him money and he gave numbers which
support this.
