I have looked at the StarTacs wistfully, but just can't seem to part with my 
old friend, it's precursor, the Motorola MicroTac.  My PCMCIA modem is a 
36000 baud Motorola, but you could use any of them that are for cellphones.  
There's a cord that runs from the modem to the cellphone.  Very easy to 
attach.  Then, just dial through the computer like you would for any other 
phone.  

While I'm out of my calling area (on the road), I still call my home "local" 
access numbers without it being long distance.  At the end, I only have the 
monthly charges that I'd have anyway for the cellphone.  And, I'm not 
dependent on finding a phone line, or being in a full-service campground to 
get my email . . . can call while resting in a city park or in the mountains!
