I'm not giving an answer...but opening dialog up (hopefully)...that someone 
repaired a bad spot on my marine plywood in front of the shower (long before 
I bought her), with a small square of steel...maybe 1/16th of an inch thick.  
It was attached with some kind of recessed screws or bolts....and I just 
thought this might be the best way to 'patch' yours if thats what you want to 
do.  My feelings about the cardboard are NOT good.  But, again, I'm just 
opening dialog...b/c these are not areas I'm a whiz at.
