Have you ever sat in an Airstream couch called a "GAUCHO couch" ?
That's what my 1983 Excella has.  And it's just like a futon.  I have taken 
the upholstery cover off of mine...and under that is a cotton-covered stuffed 
futon-like 'mattress' which has a 'dent' in the appropraite place for the 
thing to bend to make a couch.  I want to have it re-made b/c I don't want 
other people's dust-mites etc.  (it doesn't smell bad at all so I'm sure it's 
never had an mildew of any kind.)   I have asked Futons of North America and 
they said they will make me a new one for about $200.  Then I need to cover 
it with removable ? cover.  I don't think the present one is removable...I 
think it was stapled onto the folding gaucho board.  I making the removable 
out of Naugahyde with elastic.   Then, I'm going to make another one out of 
plastic backed cordoroy with a foam piece tacked in to fill in the 'fold' 
space.  That cover would FEEL better to sleep on. The plastic-backing will 
prevent any future accidents or dust-mites from entering into the new 
'mattress' (since I definitely want to make it out of cotton and I know that 
cotton is like a magnet for everything!)   Plus, I have a lot of room to 
store the unused covers behind the couch (which is a 'front' couch)
