Re: [a/s] Tow Vehicles
Dear John, We tow our 31' Airstream with a 6 cylinder Astrovan. In our
opinion the Astrovan handles better than some other choices of tow vehicles
that clearly have more power to go up hill at a greater speed. However some
of these higher powered vehicles sacrifice handling for power. One clear
distinction that we have made as to the handling characteristics of a tow
vehicle is the distance between the hitch ball and the rear axle. Most would
agree for obvious reasons, that the shorter this distance the better.
We have found that our Astrovan (which has over 200,000 miles) can pull our
trailer very, very comfortably at 65 miles per hour. We choose to drive at
57 miles per hour which provides us with a decent speed and maximum fuel
efficiency. We get 15mpg towing and 25mpg driving without tow. Can-am-rv set
our rig up and we are very pleased. We researched other vehicles and shared
the skepticism shared by others on this list. We feel we made the correct
choice for us. We too care about each other and our grandchildren that often
travel with us. We do not feel that their safety and ours has been
compromised in our tow vehicle selection. Good Luck. Joe from Long Island.
